9 나 요한은 너희 형제요 예수의 환난과 나라와 참음에 동참하는 자라. 하나님의 말씀과 예수의 증거를 인하여 밧모라 하는 섬에 있었더니
10 주의 날에 내가 성령에 감동되어 내 뒤에서 나는 나팔 소리 같은 큰 음성을 들으니
11 이르되 네가 보는 것을 책에 써서 에베소, 서머나, 버가모, 두아디라, 사데, 빌라델비아, 라오디게아 일곱 교회에 보내라 하시기로
12 몸을 돌이켜 나에게 말한 음성을 알아보려고 돌이킬 때에 일곱 금촛대를 보았고
13 촛대 사이에 인자 같은 이가 발에 끌리는 옷을 입고 가슴에 금띠를 띠고
14 그 머리와 털의 희기가 흰 양털 같고 눈 같으며 그의 눈은 불꽃 같고
15 그의 발은 풀무에 달려난 빛난 주석 같고 그의 음성은 많은 물소리와 같으며
16 그의 오른손에 일곱 별이 있고 그의 입에서는 좌우에 날선 검이 나오고 그 얼굴은 해가 힘 있게 비치는 것 같더라
17 내가 볼 때에 그의 발 앞에 엎드려져 죽은 자 같이 되매 그가 오른손을 내게 얹고 이르시되 두려워하지 말라 나는 처음이요 마지막이니
18 곧 살아 있는 자라 내가 전에 죽었었노라 볼지어다 이제 세세토록 살아 있어 사망과 음부의 열쇠를 가졌노니
19 그러므로 네가 본 것과 지금 있는 일과 장차 될 일을 기록하라
20 네가 본 것은 내 오른손의 일곱 별의 비밀과 또 일곱 금촛대라 일곱 별은 일곱 교회의 사자요 일곱 촛대는 일곱 교회니라

주석과 해설

밧모 섬에 유배된 요한은 주의 날에 성령의 감동 속에서 놀라운 환상을 보게 됩니다. 이 환상은 단순한 환영이 아닌, 교회를 향한 주님의 강력한 계시입니다. 요한이 본 일곱 촛대는 일곱 교회를 상징하며, 그 촛대 사이를 거니시는 인자 같은 이는 바로 예수 그리스도이십니다.

예수님의 형상은 구약의 다니엘서에서 묘사된 ‘인자’의 모습과도 연결되며, 이는 그분이 심판자이자 중보자이심을 드러냅니다.
머리는 흰 양털처럼 희고, 눈은 불꽃 같으며, 발은 빛난 주석처럼 타오릅니다. 이는 예수님의 거룩성과 의로움, 통찰력, 심판권을 상징합니다.

예수님의 입에서 나오는 좌우에 날 선 검은 진리의 말씀, 곧 심판과 구원의 능력 있는 복음을 뜻하며, 오른손의 일곱 별은 교회의 지도자들을 가리킵니다.
그 얼굴이 해처럼 빛난다는 표현은 주님의 영광이 얼마나 찬란한지를 보여줍니다.

예수님은 자신을 "처음이요 마지막이요, 전에 죽었지만 이제는 영원히 살아 있는 자"라 선언하십니다. 이 말은 부활하신 주님의 정체성을 분명히 드러내며, 사망과 음부의 열쇠를 가진 주님만이 궁극적인 통치자이심을 확증합니다.

적용

이 본문을 통해 교회는 단지 인간의 모임이 아니라, 주님께서 직접 거니시며 돌보시는 ‘그분의 몸’이라는 사실을 깊이 인식하게 됩니다.
일곱 촛대는 교회이며, 주님은 그 한가운데 계십니다. 이는 곧, 우리가 아무리 힘들고 외로운 시대를 살아가더라도, 교회는 주님의 보호 아래 있다는 확고한 위로입니다.

예수님이 오른손으로 붙드시는 ‘일곱 별’은 교회의 지도자들입니다. 사역자는 자신의 힘이 아닌 주님의 손에 의해 붙들려 있으며, 교회 역시 그 손길에서 결코 벗어나지 않습니다.

현대 교회는 위협받고 있습니다. 세속의 물결, 신앙의 나태함, 복음의 변질 등 여러 도전이 있지만, 주님은 여전히 교회의 중심에서 그 빛을 비추고 계십니다. 우리는 두려움 속에 무너질 것이 아니라, 살아 계신 주님의 손을 의지하며 더욱 담대히 살아야 합니다.

묵상

오늘 본문은 말 그대로 ‘주님의 현현’을 통한 회복의 메시지입니다. 예수님은 죽음을 이기시고, 사망과 음부의 열쇠를 쥐고 계십니다.
이 얼마나 위대한 승리입니까? 요한은 그 영광 앞에 죽은 자처럼 엎드렸지만, 예수님은 친히 손을 얹고 “두려워하지 말라”고 말씀하십니다.

우리도 종종 무너지는 신앙의 자리, 냉소적인 현실 앞에 주저앉을 때가 많습니다. 그러나 오늘, 주님은 우리에게 다가오셔서 말씀하십니다.
“두려워하지 말라, 나는 처음이요 마지막이니라.”
이 한 마디가 모든 절망을 소멸시키는 능력의 말씀이 됩니다.

내가 지금 처한 상황이 어떠하든, 주님은 나와 함께 교회 사이를 거니십니다. 멀리 계신 분이 아니라, 가장 가까운 자리에서 나를 살피시며, 붙드시는 분이심을 믿으십시오.

마무리 – 섬에서 울려 퍼진 복음의 시작

사도 요한은 밧모 섬이라는 외딴 유배지에 있었습니다. 인간적으로 보면 철저한 고립의 장소였고, 현실적으로는 실패자처럼 보였을지도 모릅니다.
하지만 주님은 그 절망의 공간에서 요한을 부르셨고, 그에게 온 교회를 향한 영적 비전을 보여주셨습니다.

우리가 지금 어떤 ‘밧모 섬’에 있을지라도, 주님은 그 자리에 함께 계십니다. 우리를 외면하지 않으시며, 그 자리에서 오히려 당신의 가장 깊은 계획을 펼치십니다.
오늘도 교회를 붙드시고, 교회를 거니시며, 우리를 부르시는 주님의 음성에 귀 기울입시다.

9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.
10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,
11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”
12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,
13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.
14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.
15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.
16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.
20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

Commentary and Explanation

John, exiled on the island of Patmos, experiences a divine encounter on the Lord’s Day. This is not merely a spiritual experience, but a profound vision for the church.
The seven golden lampstands represent the seven churches, and walking among them is “one like a son of man” — Jesus Christ Himself.

His appearance mirrors the vision of the “Son of Man” in Daniel. The white hair symbolizes purity and divine eternity.
Eyes like blazing fire indicate His penetrating insight. His feet, like glowing bronze, reflect strength and judgment. His voice, like rushing waters, demonstrates authority and glory.

The double-edged sword from His mouth is the Word of God — able to judge and to save. The seven stars in His right hand represent the leaders or messengers of the churches. His face shining like the sun reflects the fullness of His majesty.

Jesus affirms His identity as “the First and the Last,” the Living One who overcame death. He now holds the keys to death and Hades, asserting ultimate dominion.

Application

This passage powerfully reminds us that the church is not a human institution but is under the direct care of Christ.
He walks among the lampstands — He is with His church.

The leaders of the churches are held in His hand, not by their own power. Even today, despite persecution, compromise, or worldliness, Jesus is present and active.

The believer, too, must find comfort and courage in knowing that the Lord of glory has not forsaken His people. His presence calls us to live faithfully, to stand firm, and to trust in His sustaining hand.

Reflection

This vision is both humbling and empowering. When John sees the glorified Christ, he falls as if dead.
And yet, Jesus touches him — “Do not be afraid.”

These same words echo through our lives today. We, too, may be overwhelmed by trials, fears, or failures. But Jesus, the Living One, comes close.
He reminds us that He holds all things — including the future.

Wherever we find ourselves, whether in comfort or exile, in strength or despair — Christ is in our midst.
He walks among us. He speaks. He strengthens.

Epilogue – From Isolation to Revelation

Patmos was not the end for John. Though exiled and alone, he was not forgotten.
It was there that the Lord unveiled the most glorious vision of the victorious Christ.

Perhaps your own “Patmos” feels silent and distant. But God speaks in such places. He walks among the lampstands — among us.
Listen. Believe. Write. Obey.
